remains a part of that culture, albeit more underground.  In one case, the victim died from her injuries; in another the victim committed suicide.  In both cases, I think, there were those who advocated each woman marry one of her attackers as a solution.

Not too many years ago, "bride burning" was a problem often swept under the rug (even as the British intervened to stop the Thuggee and suttee) and the perpetrators were rarely punished.  In that area today, there is still the concept of honor where the victim may be shunned, expelled from the community or even killed.

However we are still not that many years ourselves from attorneys alleging that women who frequented bars, wore short skirts or minis, and who were "overly friendly" were "asking" to be raped.  There needs to be a lot of cultural changes before women are seen as equals in many parts of the world (and female circumcision remains a common practice in some places)

Sorry if I wandered a bit but there is a lot of injustice in the world and much of it seems based on misogyny.

      •  it just seems like there is so much work (3+ / 0-)

remaining and the 1970's looked as if we were gaining ground.  Now I just feel tired as I know my daughters and granddaughters face a world not much better than the one their mother faced.  On days such as this, I feel tired as I know that I don't have much more time to try to effect changes

        •  this means changing an entire centuries long, (4+ / 0-)

fully entrenched, patriarchal paradigm.  It will not come fast, we will lose ground on occassion, but we still will be moving forward.

If you look at the Hindustan Times (which has been updated within the past hour)

Show full coverage of this crime
          the report of another rape

and before the update there were 2 other rapes on the front page and one false report of rape

the rape reports wouldn't have happened a decade ago

we are slowly moving forward . . . it will be the way it is because of what has to change.  Americans are used to what is realty a speedy rate of correction, this speed does not happen in the rest of the world.

what the woman wore is relevant, and under the rules of some states, that can be raised--and there are juries who will buy it.

The last time we mixed religion and politics people got burned at the stake.
