  •  Well, you know how the media is. If it looks (5+ / 0-)

like a tommy gun then they will call it a tommy gun.  No different than calling an AR-15 a M16 which often happens as they are basically the same gun (no burst fire or full auto on the AR-15 but those are rarely used in the military anyway as an infantryman doesn't usually carry more than 200 rounds of ammo).

Everything with an AK clip is called an AK.   It is helpful in trying to identify problems with the system if we have accurate information though I may seem pedantic at times in my questioning people

to whom? Or is this the same sort of distracting detail we are seeing so much of?

Seriously, it's not much different from a straight one.  Unless people are straight-up dying from the sight of one.

          It's reflexive distraction.

          •  Gas-charged chambering (0+ / 0-)

is the reason banana magazine and straight magazines look more dangerous.  Even a 5 round magazine which barely shows beneath the block is a giveaway that the gun is a semi-automatic, and can be fired as fast as you can pull the trigger.

The magazine is only a visual reference for this, but as such, is accurate in the public mind. A gun with an extended magazine is more powerful, prolific and quick than a gun with a bolt action. Simple. True.

This is the reason most of these are referred to as AK's. Its the method of chambering which is so dangerous and which allows for large magazines so one shooter may "pray and spray."
