it's not the NRA preventing mental health records from being included.  There's plenty of things the NRA is actually fucking up, you don't have to make up any.

the purpose of the second amendment is to promote a well-regulated militia, in the same sense that the purpose of the first amendment is to promote a well-informed electorate.

    •  the NRA (7+ / 0-)

makes it impossible to discuss rational regulation, period.  Show me a law in the last 15 years that the NRA came out in support of which provides actual, functioning limits on gun ownership by anyone. Heck, show me one that they didn't oppose.

      •  Here you go: (0+ / 0-)

        Gun control group MAIG says:

The number of records entered into NICS has increased significantly since the law was signed in January 2008. As of December 2010, NICS officials were able to access nearly 70 million records when conducting a background check, including more than 1.1 million records identifying people who are prohibited for reasons of mental health. By October 2011, the number of mental health records in the NICS database had risen to more than 1.3 million. As the number of records in NICS has increased, so has the number of attempted firearms purchases that have been denied because of the mental health status of the buyer. In 2006, for example, only 405 gun sales were declined for mental health reasons; in 2010, that number increased to 6,103.
        The NRA backed the law.

    •  There are many things the NRA has not actually (8+ / 0-)

done. It is the function of lobbyists to persuade elected officials and staffers to write legislation to the gun manufacturers benefit. Now I happen to have personal knowledge of lobbyists and corporate folks personally delivering the laws they want, all written out, to legislators who changed some grammar and punctuation before submitting and passing them. Now ALEC probably helps with that too.

I think you are perfectly well aware of that. Just being sure no one thinks those of us who accuse the NRA of doing things don't know how the extortion works.

We also know that it is a small part of the 4+ million NRA peeps that are doing these things. What upsets me, and probably others in the discussion, is that the majority of that organization that is not in lockstep with the leaders, should have the balls* to get their association back to what it is supposed to be.

    •  I should also add (0+ / 0-)

that except for the fact that I don't join groups (except for the one, for obvious reasons) RKBA is one of the few I've come closest.

I'm far more your ally than your enemy, I think.
