  •  I was thinking the same thing. Even nut cases (6+ / 0-)

like Allen West and Michelle Bachmann think they have the country's best interests at heart.

I do not doubt that there are a few totally corrupt individuals who are just in it for themselves and would sell out the country in a heartbeat. But frankly, there are probably just as many on our side. They always try to be on the winning side.

    •  I am not so sure about Bachman, et al (13+ / 0-)

I think people like Bachman and most Republicans conflate self-interest with public interest.   "If it's good for me, it's good for the country."

And, of course, there are those who are clear-eyed about their selfishness.  But I think most Republican leadership falls into the first category.

    •  i'm not defending the remarks. (4+ / 0-)

i'm saying their passion is as strong as ours.
i despise what they say and believe in. it scares me.
i indicated it's more extreme than ours.
until i remember the burning seething hatred for most things bush/cheney i saw here and participated in and still do.
the difference between me and raptavio is i know i do it, and have no problem with me doing it.
      but i don't pretend i don't.
raptavio screams b.s. false equivalence...because you know. when he does it it's right. when they do it its wrong.
which is the same EXACT thing they say about us.

so though i know they are wrong, i don't pretend we're innocents who said bush was a great guy, we just disagree.

We consume the carcasses of creatures of like appetites, passions and organs with our own, and fill the slaughterhouses daily with screams of pain and fear. Robert Louis Stevenson

      •  Both sides may do it (0+ / 0-)

But I don't see our side's extremists running the show. We have a long history and lots of experience with circular punching squads (I'm not using "firing squads" because I've become conscious of a lot of "gun language" in our culture and I'm curious as to the effect that not using it might have. It's making me search for different idiom, at the least :) ) and are used to stuffing our own crazies back down into the rucksack.

I see conservative crazies, though, being given air time, the public microphone, attention, consideration, and most importantly, money and fame, thus showing the moderate voices that if you want "success" through money and fame--if you want to be listened to--in conservative media, you get there through the proven method of being loud and crazy.

Crazy brings the eyeballs, the ears, the butts in seats. If it bleeds, it leads.

How does the Republican Congress sit down with all the butthurt over taxing the wealthy?

      •  The large majority of their passion is based (1+ / 0-)

on lies and exaggerations, though.  Most people on this site who found it during the Bush years were discussing a million plus dead in Iraq based on a lie; spying on citizens; indefinite detention; torture - all very real things that were happening and that our government was doing.

A mind-blowing number of people on the right have passionately embraced opposition to Obama because they do not accept his birth certificate as proof of citizenship.  They heard someone on Fox say the words "socialist" and "Marxist" in association with Obama or one of his policies and now they are convinced that any minute a red army is going to descend upon them and take all of their guns and give them free healthcare.  They believe that Obama is the evil-doer heading up the War on Christmas.  Even the ones that I know who aren't supposed to be crazy think that there's something to the idea that Hillary Clinton would fake a blood clot in order to avoid testifying about Benghazi.  They're fucking loons.

The point is that we are talking about totally different kinds of "passion" here - and one of the reasons that the Republicans are more and more losing their following is because the lies and conspiracy theories can really only get them so far before more practical observers just start to lose interest in the weirdness.

And all of this crazy from the rightwing is one reason that I hope I never hear this President say the phrase, "There are no bad ideas," ever again.  Because there are bad ideas - tons of them - and the GOP is over there hatching them everyday lately.  There was a time when Republicans offered what I believed to be bad ideas, but at least they were workable - the workable solutions from the GOP are a thing of the past.  The invasion of Iraq and the chaos that ensued - the chaos that was apparently completely unanticipated by the Bush Administration - was and is a perfect allegory for most everything they've offered up over the past 20 years.

Even nut cases like Allen West and Michelle Bachmann think they have the country's best interests at heart.

they're both grifters, like the GOP in general, and the rightwing media propaganda machine that supports them. if they thought they could make as much money, plying liberals/progressives, they'd switch in a heartbeat. the difference is that, as a general rule, liberals/progressives tend not be easily led rubes, like the vast majority of non-1% conservatives are. we question things that don't sound right, regardless of who's spouting it, low-end conservatives don't: if rush limbaugh says it's so, it must be.

      •  Its so easy (0+ / 0-)

to call West and Bachmann grifters, and Cheney a war criminal, and may even be true.  I think so but I'm prejudiced.

They may also honestly believe their philosophy will rescue the country.

I think back to the books I read about the guerilla and resistance movements during WW II in China and Yugoslavia and France, where the communists and some of the monarchists and conservatives allied to fight the occupier.

Its only under those circumstances that you'll ever find out what is in someone's heart of hearts.

And of course,  many times the conservative cells would  sabotage or betray or even murder the communist cells, and vice versa.

Orly, it isn't evidence just because you downloaded it from the internet.
