It was excruciating trying to look at the world with an open mind and optimism when even at that age I could see we were losing so much to the conservatives and evangelicals.  From enduring an alter call in my public high school during a Christmas convo to being called a Commie after an Army Ranger spoke and told us the symbols of the US were the flag and the cross (and the fact I disagreed vehemently,) this Quaker girl was pretty much on the fringe all through my teens. lol Of course, in a town of 20k with 92 churches at that point, I probably didn't have much of a chance to be in the majority of thought or belief anyway.
