  •  I was surprised at the choice (0+ / 0-)

The choir was of course magnificent.

But I was surprised that the organizers chose a song that was, after all, the most potent symbol of a divided country -- not a symbol of what unites us, but of "God is on our side" from one side in the most ferocious war on American soil since 1789 -- and one we still really haven't recovered from, so an in-your-face slap at the South.

It also reinforced the "Christian nation" message that came from all of the religious speakers, which made me uncomfortable too.

For an inaugural message about unity and moving forward "together," as the President said repeatedly, it seemed an odd choice.
