  •  And there's a way to do that (10+ / 0-)

without it coming across as condescending and arrogant. Some people handle a need for clarification with grace. But I've seen it happen several times where someone ignores or is actually dismissive of a whole diary because someone had the unmitigated gall to call rounds, "bullets" or, heaven forbid, a clip, a "magazine" or whatever -- adding nothing to the conversation and changing the tone to that of pedantic Professor Dickworth bringing out the cane to chastise the class dunce.

Nobody likes to be told they're wrong but I think most of us appreciate learning a thing or two. Just sayin' that a bit of diplomacy is necessary especially when talking about a subject that you may know more about than your fellow commenting critters.

I know I tend to come across as an arrogant ass much of the time-- something I'm working on.

    •  I think I am the guilty party on the clip/mag (9+ / 0-)

clarification but the diary in question called for the banning of all weapons that had a magazine.  As I noted, many antique weapons have what is considered a magazine and that to ban a detachable clip, while a type of magazine, is different from banning all weapons which have a magazine and posted a couple of links discussing the difference,

If to determine if the author really meant to ban all weapons that are not single shot, double barreled or pepperboxes makes me Prof Dickworth, then so be it as there are diarists here who advocate the complete ban of all firearms, so it is possible the diarist really did mean to ban all weapons with a magazine.

I thought it was worth clarification

I appreciate when someone comes into the conversation and does actually enlighten folks about the terminology. I'm not so clear on much of it myself. I do think it can be a distraction for many people and all too often it is not handled gently. I'm not calling out anyone specific for pedantic dickery -- I don't have a brain that retains who's who in this faceless mode of communication. I'm all for clarification. If you handle yourself well and keep in mind how easy it is to post something that seems like a personal insult you can do great things for promoting a fuller understanding of the issues.

        •  that is how I try to conduct myself as calling (3+ / 0-)

for a ban on all weapons with a magazine will probably never get any farther than a diary here on Kos and it is a pity if the suggestions are dismissed because the author did not really mean magazine.

However I grow very tired.  I am only up so many hours per day and dealing with contentious challenges such as if I am bothered by pictures of piles of dead toddlers or if images of bullet riddled children does not evoke emotion in me or if I have a heart all take a certain toll on me and I have to question if it is worth the effort any more and if my efforts might not be better directed elsewhere.

I have reached this point on other topics and some I now avoid as being futile to even engage in and some I hang in on in the hope of learning and educating and perhaps informing or evolving my own understanding of the issue.  I am now at such  a point with gun diaries.

          •  Worst case on that one, as I see it, is that some (0+ / 0-)

collectors items would end up in museums instead of in private homes. No biggie.
