I expect I've told this tale before (I plead encroaching age): a woman from Mexico City moved to a rural East TN  community, almost on the Kentucky border, and worked for awhile as a technician in my lab. She'd married into a lower rung of a very high-powered PRI family (think Presidente), and from awkward silences in some of our conversations about family history, I surmised she and her husband had moved to a very obscure corner of North America for ... compelling reasons ...

She was a very proud mother of 2, but one day told me how especially pleased she was of her son because he had his father's light European skin and features, while she and her little girl had what she apologetically called "the mark of the jalapeño" -- a term I'd never heard before but immediately understood to mean her darker, redder skin color and very Zapotec cheekbones, nose (♥ ♥ ♥!!!), and hands.

My jaw dropped (I'm a SoCal gal, born and raised in a land of people of Mesoamerican ancestry, with a dram of it myself) and I popped off to the tune of "Girl-that's-some-BULLSHIT-you-are-GORGEOUS-that-SKIN-those-BONES-your-face-you-look-like-a-QUEEN-how-DARE-they-trip-on-you-grrrrrrrr..." She looked at me in complete disbelief, tears welling up in her eyes. She was 35 and no one in her LIFE had ever told her how beautiful she was! Grrrrrrrrrr
