    ...lapses into that "stereotypical" speech when she visits her friends in the black church, and Scout and Jem ask her why she talked like that when she never did while at their home. And Calpurnia said that she did so as not to put off her friends, by coming off as "acting too white" (and therefore too good for them).

      The same was true of white working-class men I knew who worked on the maintenance crew at the college where my dad worked.  They used correct grammar with him, then slipped into their common lingo of double negatives (and huge amounts of good-natured cursing) with each other.

      A 47% return on investment--that's pretty doggoned good!
