  •  It is so hard to imagine (3+ / 0-)

a world where a slave trade was allowed to flourish in the first place.  Not so hard to imagine the mindset, which still flourishes in the 1%.

Like America's original sin:  1/8th of its citizens slaves.  Can that ever be redeemed?

      No.

But we can learn from it, vow never to repeat it, and go out of our way to do everything possible to provide equal opportunity for everyone going forward. Tragedies of humanity on a scale like this defy complete explanation or truly adequate reconciliation.

Germany is another example of a country tarnished beyond complete repair, at least in the history books -- multi-generational guilt isn't what I'm talking about.

That's not to say nothing has been done in either case, just that it won't ever be enough to finally say, "I forgive you."

      That's how I see it.
