People are trashing his military service including the circumstances which landed him in a prison camp. Based on nothing more than rumor and bare assertion.

    That's Swiftboating, in a nutshell.

    •  It's not a rumor (13+ / 0-)

McCain's difficulty as a pilot was well known and documented at the time. http://www.factcheck.org/...

I blame his superiors for not taking away his wings so to speak. He was clearly not pilot material. I wonder if his father got them to keep him on.

For that to be true, you'd have blame him for the Forrestal incident, which is ridiculous.  He lost one aircraft through pilot error.

It is swiftboating.  He may not have been a great pilot.  He may have made a mistake in the heat of combat.  He may have been a hot dog.  Frankly, that last bit is true of a lot of pilots.  It doesn't mean he should be ridiculed for his service and his sacrifice.

That said, he's a self-serving jackass.  I'm embarrassed to have him representing me.

how you can use the FactCheck citation as evidence for a lot of accusations that are not supported by it.

It completely disputes your own narrative.

McCain did not lose 5 planes.

According to your link here is his record:

        1. Lost his first plane due to pilot error
        2. Lost his second plane due to engine failure (as reported by the Navy).  Not sure what magic he could have performed to restart his engine and fly to safety.
        3. Lost his plane on the deck of the Forrestall  when either his plane, or the plane next to his was struck by a missile (actual investigation is unsure, but it is felt to be more likely that McCain's plane was not the one hit).  Again, not sure what magic McCain was supposed to perform to save his plane here.
        4.  Shot down in action and was given a silver star.
        5.  There was no fifth plane lost, that is a complete fabrication.

Finally, McCain's commanders had repeatedly stated that he was a skilled pilot, if a bit of a hot dog (like just about every ring tapping naval aviator I have ever known).

There is a lot to dislike about McCain's record as a Senator, excepting his strong arguments against torture, but saying he isn't a war here is a joke.

I am sure that I am now going to get the typical "McCain's true Naval record was covered up by his father" bullshit.
