your dad was in, in the Pacific, but my dad told me they would shoot every body they saw in front of their position in the head with the sniper rifle every morning then drag the bodies to the pit they'd bulldozed. They took no wounded prisoners, no prisoners at all, on either side.

I'm not so sure killing in battle is always so definite a case of self defense.

Like I said, Poppa never told me he had killed anyone in combat. He was Company Clerk, and, to hear him tell the tale, spent his time in uniform behind a typewriter.

Unit he served in had been recruited from the Deep South; Poppa was one of the few soldiers in the Company who was fluently literate, and the only one who could type. The rest of the soldiers had gotten used to having their pay and liberty records done correctly and on time, and took pains to keep "their" Clerk away from combat... or so Poppa told me! Wasn't until he was near to dying that he ever told any of his children anything different...

very often conceal a grenade on their persons so that they could kill our corpsmen when they came to give medical aid- that was considered to be (and it was) very demoralizing. That's why things like shooting the enemy wounded were done. My dad was a USMC Master Sergeant in the Pacific in WWII, and though he didn't talk much about it, nor did he like to talk about it all, the things he mentioned did talk about were bad enough.
