  •  I have been thinking on this very issue (6+ / 0-)

    the past few weeks.

A lot of people are talking about how violent video games are affecting teenagers and desensitizing them.

But we send teenagers out into the most stressful real-life situations and expect them to kill, and somehow come home A-OK?

    •  We don't really care how they come home. n/t (0+ / 0-)

When banjos are outlawed, only outlaws will have banjos.

    •  First they are put through intensive (0+ / 0-)

desensitization programs, developed by the Army after it was determined something like 20% of the military weapons issued in WWII had been fired more than very minimal for sighting, etc.

When they came home, there was not a desensitization program for years. Haven't heard that one has been started.

I think the issue of desensitizing those who play violent video games may be what they pay attention to when someone makes a foreshadowing comment. Many of the mass murderers have been a surprise to those who know them. Almost all, retrospectively, had made or written a comment that indicated what they were thinking and planning. Those hearing them may have disregarded the implication because of the jargon associated with the video games.

One successful program developed after Columbine was raising the consciousness of students in junior high and above to comments that could be important. The programs included a phone # or individuals who could be contacted to report the comment and person. Follow up is very cautious and private. How many incidents have been prevented was not given, apparently more than a few.
