  •  However, they trained in doing the D&C method not (4+ / 0-)

the vacuum method.  Apparently there is a way to do vacuum aspiration with nothing more than a modified syringe that anyone can be taught to do in a couple of hours rather than weeks of practice.

    •  still blind operation (5+ / 0-)

but obviously safer with a syringes. Most abortions--all early ones circa 15 yrs ago (when I knew) in my city were d and c with vacume. You seem knowledgable a lot of people think it has to be a separate method...ie d an c OR vacume. It can and often is both...using a curette and vacume suction.

It's the C (curettage) that is one thing that has danger of perforatiog uterus because its a blind operation. I am guessing there is not much "c" in the syringe method making it safer still...but just a guess. They would have worked out a way without high complication rate, I am sure, that trained lay people or nurses can be successful at.

      •  I don't think they did. Did they use vacuum in (1+ / 0-)

the 1970's (1969-1973) as part of the procedure?  Even if they sometimes did, I don't think the Jane Collective did due to equipment issues of the era.

        •  (not sure which "did" you mean) (0+ / 0-)

ie. Did work out a way without high complication rate?
or did use a curette (comment said "D and C" that's dilation and Curettage--involves using a curette to gently scrape lying of uterus

          •  Was it normal to use vacuum in that era or just (0+ / 0-)

a curette and even if it was regularly used I am not sure if the Jane Collective used it at the time.  Remember, this was all 40 years ago.
