    but I'm always thrilled to contribute, if I can, to recycling and reusing, and thinking-out-of-the-mainstream.

    Should the next instalment feature means of starting fires if you haven't matches? (Do they still teach kids to burn paper with a magnifying glass?)

      cheapest, lightest, most readily available pieces of survival gear around. People sometimes look at me funny when I pull it out because they know I don't smoke, but there are so many little chores you can do with them, I always 'carry'. ;-)

      the wood-stove going in the zero degree weather recently, all I could think of was how even after months in the 8-foot snow drifts, and weeks with no genuine food, members of the Donner Party managed to start fires more than once- without matches, newspaper, those cute little starter bricks, or anything helpful at all. Kinda changed my perspective as I waited for the fire to catch.
          As far as the magnifying glass fires, well I learned that when I was a kid ('course they let us roll those little silver balls of mercury around the lab table in my day too) but as far as kids these days, I think there's an app for that.
