  •  Because he was woefully inexperienced. (7+ / 0-)

To deal with a financial crisis at that magnitude would be a career-defining challenge at any stage in a presidency.  But if the President and the country are lucky, it happens after the President has had time to establish his clout and to know how to work the players in the room, after the country has become comfortable with the President's judgment.

Obama and we weren't that lucky.  And on top of that, we elected a President who had spent only 4 years in Washington, as a Senator, and half that time running for President.  He had no executive experience and very little Washington experience.  Many of us saw these as either virtues or irrelevant.

I don't know what an experienced Obama would have decided to do and I can't attribute motive.  But many of us bloggers knew what mistakes were being made as they were being made.  Our mistake was not being more vocal at the time.  Progressives' moment of greatest influence was at the beginning of Obama's presidency.  Instead of having debates about the quality of our "support" for him, we should have been out there on the streets every day pushing for bold decisions.
