  •  Lucas didn't write or direct it. (5+ / 0-)

So we can credit him with only being guilty of a slightly better suckpocalypse, Phantom Menace.

    •  Gad. That movie is an abomination. (4+ / 0-)

And Clones isn't much better. I thought Sith was excellent, though, so for me the prequels weren't a total loss.

      •  I'm a little more generous about Clones (4+ / 0-)

and a little less generous with Sith.  Which is to say, Phantom Menace was a crime; Clones was just not good; Sith was decent.  But out of the entire prequel trilogy there are maybe like 30 seconds of footage that actually live up to the original trilogy.

        •  It was really Hayden Christiansen's (4+ / 0-)

performance in Sith that stole the show for me. I think that was one hell of a hard role to do well, and I think he did it well. Ewan Macgregor was really first-rate also.

The one scene though that stood out most for me was with Jimmy Smits/Senator Organa.

After the revolt, he lands on the jetty at the Jedi Temple, and challenges the clone troopers guarding it.

And a young Jedi padawan of about 14 hops up, and starts fighting furiously to get through to Organa's aircar and escape.

He's good, damn good, a prodigy. Plinking blaster fire back at the them with perfect aim.

But there are too many. He takes one in the shoulder, and goes down swinging. "NO!" cries Organa, but he quickly speeds away.

          Whoa.

had put a lot of work into doing a good acting job in Sith, and I give him credit for that, but the improvement is only relative to his shitty work in the previous two - his performance still didn't measure up to any kind of standard.  He's just not a good actor, and I say that having seen in a few non-Star Wars things where he was equally sub-standard.

Lucas just made a lot of bad choices at the beginning of the prequel trilogy, and wasn't able to overcome them in Sith.  The one and only blockbuster performance in the entire prequel series was by Ian McDiarmid (the guy who plays Palpatine) - i.e., the only alumnus from Return of the Jedi.  Ewan MacGregor is a good actor, but he never had anything to work with.  Natalie Portman is a good actress, but same deal - nothing to work with, either in the scripts or from Hayden Christiansen.

        •  I wanted to add one of my favorite lines: (4+ / 0-)

"So this is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause."

Yep. Star Wars doesn't really have many profound things to say IMO, but that is one of them.

Fool the mob. Appropriate power. Repeat.
