  •  Correction -- you mean Southern White Democrats (14+ / 0-)

Black Southerners remain as solidly Democratic as anyone in the country.

    •  Blacks confined to ghettos (3+ / 0-)

Unfortunately, all the blacks are packed into gerrymandered, ghettoized, majority-minority districts. As a result, the black voters have virtually no influence whatsoever on elections in all the other districts.

The Repubs got away with this Jim Crow gerrymander all across the ex-Confederacy. Maybe that's why they think they can gerrymander the Electoral College now and maintain minority rule henceforth.

Although it fights against what northerners tell ourselves, southern cities are actually on the whole less residentially segregated than many traditional big cities in the U.S. Northeast and Midwest.  And there are wide swathes of middle-class black suburbs in areas like Atlanta and Dallas, which tend to be rare in the North (except in Maryland).

than the South. I lived in Brooklyn and Newark. There are some neighborhoods that are diverse and then you neighborhoods that are a plurality a certain race or group. I just thought a better word could had been used.

        •  POLITICAL ghettos (0+ / 0-)

though the poster ought to have made that clearer if he were going to use that term.

        •  About 'ghettoized' (0+ / 0-)

Centuries before the Italian word ghetto had anything to do with blacks in America, ghettos were the areas in Europe where Jews were confined by law, only Jews inside the lines, and no Jews outside.

That was the meaning for the word as I used it. Black voters being confined to election districts with few non-blacks inside (or at least, few whites), and few blacks outside the lines -- whatever their level of education or income.

Looking it up at, I find the definition of the word exactly as I used it:

          Definition of GHETTO
a quarter of a city in which Jews were formerly required to live
a quarter of a city in which members of a minority group live especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure
a : an isolated group 'a geriatric ghetto'
b : a situation that resembles a ghetto especially in conferring inferior status or limiting opportunity 'the pink-collar ghetto'
Note that nothing in the definition refers to "impoverished" neighborhoods, nor did I. (As a white voter living in Cong Charlie Rangel's majority-minority district, I'm well aware that many black sections of Harlem are staunchly middle class.) Rather, the dictionary and I refer to legal pressure, an isolated group, limiting opportunity.

You were quick to announce that I was insensitive, but you are simply incorrect about the word usage. I can assure you that no offense was intended.

      •  The EC coup attempts now going on are worrysome (1+ / 0-)

and something every progressive, Democrat, really just conscientious citizen needs to track and fight. It is very clearly a coordinated attempt to neutralize us "urban voters" regardless of skin color. The sponsor of Virginia's Senate bill is blatant about that:

The last election, constituents were concerned that it didn’t matter what they did, that more densely populated areas were going to outvote them
Yeah, welcome to some semblance of democracy and not plutocracy and plantation society.

My hope is that if these things get through they will face successful Baker v. Carr, Reynolds v. Sims and Wesberry v. Sanders (all "one-man-one-vote" precedents) challenges. As a last resort, all us (3/5 of a voter in that new Ole Virginny) diluted majorities need to ensure no Republican can ever win a statewide office vote again. That is a justified last ditch retaliation for what is indeed an attempted coup by a minority to hang onto undue power.
