  •  No Meteor, that is not why they are opposed (6+ / 0-)

    Your title is misleading.

They are opposed because we have a direct initiated constitutional amendment system that would easily overturn any bullshit like that.

It will simply not work in Florida.  And they know that coming out in favor of it will make them seem like fucking assholes for no reason.

These two men you hold as heroes had no fucking problem instituting the most egregious assault on voter rights since the Jim Crow era.  Thousands of dollars in penalties for  turning in a voter registration form late, cutting voting hours that led to 9 hours of line time in south FL, provisional ballots for just name changes and college students, voter id, etc. etc.

Unfortunately for PA and VA, there are NO citizen initiatives, so the GOP can act like assholes with impunity.

could block the proposal.  It was used successfully during GOP assault against public employees.  I think this egregious cheating would also be successfully blocked. Unfortunately we still have the ruthless GOP gerrymandering which gives Republicans a super majority in a Democratic leaning state.

      •  I am worried about PA because we do not ballot (0+ / 0-)

iniatives and I think PA is going to try this too, it sure seems likely. I am trying to see what Republicans in PA, if any, oppose it.

      •  Ohio had anti-gerrymandering referendum on (0+ / 0-)

ballot last November using an independent commission to draw legislative districts. Ohio SSoS (shitty secretary of state) put it on the ballot in the most confusing and misleading way possible and all Republican officials campaigned against it so it must have been decent.

        •  Yes, it would have been a big improvement. (0+ / 0-)

But it was complicated and unfortunately easily demonized with lies from the GOP propaganda machine.  It might still be possible to pass a simple amendment that focused on principles without so many details, but it is a lot of work to collect the signatures.

    •  I don't quite think it's fair to say I consider... (6+ / 0-)

...them heroes, especially since I wrote dozens of diaries about the war on voting documenting the kind of shenanigans that were pulled in various states, including Florida. They spoke against the plan, Florida is key to the plan. That gives us reason to hope, along with the news from Virginia, that even if the whole idea isn't dead, it won't succeed in a couple of crucial states.

My prediction is that this will definitely work for the GOP in PA, but should backfire tremendously.  Part of the reason so many Dems turned out in FL was because of the assault by the GOP.

I think we'll break the GOP hold in PA as a result... and in 2020, when the districts are redrawn, it will be more favorable to us-especially since that is a presidential year when Dems turn out anyways.

I think it fails in VA and FL, possibly WI.  Will be overturned in MI.   The GOP will be vilified for their overreach and maybe, just maybe, we can get some traction again on the NPV.
