  •  In FL it makes no sense for the GOP to do this (1+ / 0-)

They can't win without all of Florida's EVs.  They would allow the Dems to get EVs in the south without even making much of an effort.  In a good GOP year, the GOP sweeps the south. If this measure was in effect in FL only in 2000, Al Gore would've won.  In 2004, if these plans had been in effect in VA and FL only, John Kerry would've come closer to winning and might've adopted a different strategy that would've allowed him to grab additional EVs to win.

It would render FL just about irrelevant in electoral politics, which, as much as some of us might think is a good thing, it would be in fact awful for the State of Fl.  In fact, the community that should oppose this strongly is the Cuban community.  They get disproportionate attention from DC because of Florida's importance in electoral politics. Retirees should also be concerned.

    •  It might be hard to find good states to try it. (0+ / 0-)

It has to be a state that is both thourougly gerrymandered and yet unlikely to be an R win presidentially.  If there's a good chance Rs would win it, like FL, then Rs would rather chance the winner take all.

And it's not like the Rs can change back every four years based on predictions.  Thats' a little obvious.

And that's true in any state that's truly a swing state.  Winner take all maximizes clout.   Would republican officials in FL rather have the certainty of a president who ignored them, or the certainty of a president who, regardless of party, elevates their parochial interests?  Ask Chris Christie.

That's not even "gun control". It's more like "massacre control".

and where they control all levels of state government are Michigan and Pennsylvania.  So we still need to be vigilant about the Repubs trying to sneak this plan through in either of those states.

Fortunately the Michigan House and the Pennsylvania Senate are very closely divided with just a slightly R majority, so I like our chances.
