    .... it was my understanding that it referred back to "nits" which are the eggs/larvae of parasitic insects such as lice.  Thus, if one was a "nitwit," one was acting with the intelligence (or "wit") of a louse or other parasitic insect.  

    One only needs to turn on Fox News or go to Free Republic to see lots and lots of "nitwits" who have no cognitive or mental disabilities, but definitely skewed world-views.

    Of course, I could be wrong ....

        When you say it is "common sense" what you are really saying is "I don't have any evidence to back up my argument", because it is quite often neither common nor sense.
