Paddy saw the future, and it wasn't pretty. The only thing that Paddy predicted that has not yet happened to TV is killing the host right on the air. Everything else he foresaw came true, including the corporatization of the whole planet.

There isn't a single wasted line of dialogue in that film. And while the "mad as hell" speech is what everyone seems to remember, I think the "only three percent of you read books" missive by Howard and the Arthur Jensen money speech are the best pieces of the whole thing - pure Paddy Chayevsky, and pure prophecy.

Except for the "no brutality" part by Jensen. That would be a little more messy than he thought. If not for that slight inaccuracy I would swear that Paddy had a time machine. But the "all anxiety tranquilized - all boredom amused" part he crushed so hard over the left field bleachers that it needed postage (with apologies to Bull Durham), and quite possibly would have amazed NASA.

"Because only three percent of you read books - and only fifteen percent of you read newspapers - but right now there is a whole and entire generation that didn't know anything that didn't come out of this tube." - Howard Beale
