while also containing some almost Dickensonian character studies.  I read a ton of books on the "crisis" (well, some considerable part thereof), and if I had to recommend just one, that'd be it.  Lewis had actually worked on Wall Street ("Liar's Poker"), the parents of one of his major characters had been Wall Street fund managers, and that character (a total hoot with an ADHD-tendency to say whatever pops into his head and a thoroughgoing cynicism about Wall Street by the end) had been involved in a previous blow-up of subprime and asset-backed credit back in the '90's -- so the book is, to a larger degree than any written by a journalist, an academic, or a politician, an "inside job." Extremely informative & a great read.
