  •  TBI... perhaps we should extend the definition. (9+ / 0-)

    Traumatic Brain Injury.

Soldiers get it due to smacking their heads during explosions, or just being near an explosion, repeatedly.

Having someone smash you in the head repeatedly seems to me to be a good enough reason to consider the diagnosis.

Here's the major deal though.  When a soldier gets it, they NOW are expected to take time to rest and recover, and there's still side effects.

When it comes to football...  "Walk it off!!! Walk It off!"

I don't blame Christians. I blame Stupid. Which sadly is a much more popular religion these days.

    •  I've Had Maybe Ten Concusions (3+ / 0-)

in my life. I like to run and jump off of things. Do things that maybe are not smart. But when that happened it was kind of a big issue. I didn't think it was, but my parents sure did.

My parents never said, hey pull back that skateboard and ride down that hill again.

When opportunity calls pick up the phone and give it directions to your house.

The University of Utah, which I live about 2 blocks from (Salt Lake City), seems to be a haven for longboard enthusiasts. When walking on the campus in the evenings we are often passed by groups of longboarders organized in what can only be described by this bicyclist as pace lines. Luckily you can hear them from a long way off so you can get out of their way.

For miles downhill from the campus you have to be watchful of individual boarders who actually commute home on longboards. The most radical one I ever saw was going down 5th South where it s-curves into 4th South and drops a couple of hundred feet at the same time. That street is 3 lanes on each side, and this fellow was in the center lane, moving at maybe 15 mph. But he was just starting his run, I'm sure he got up a lot more speed by the bottom.

To get back uphill they usually use the TRAX light rail system, or walk. They're in great shape. Or rather the survivors are. One of them got killed from the effects of hitting a manhole cover in the dark at sufficient speed. That was in a mountainy town in the southern part of the Salt Lake valley, though.

        Moderation in most things.

    •  I have wondered for years about this. (4+ / 0-)

I have often wondered what the effect of being slapped upside the head so much as a child did to me.  I can remember being knocked to the floor on a regular basis.  Are some of the psychiatric problems I have experienced a result of this? If I end up with early onset of Parkinsons or anything like that I will take it a possible verification.

I am not putting this out there for sympathy, I really think that the effects of this kind of abuse of young children should be studied. If this is bad for adult brains it cannot be good for growing brains.

That passed by; this can, too. - Deor
