Don't discount the effect of teh stupid.  This is a prime example of what Jindal was talking about.  A smart crazy person would likely not propose something that had cost so much in lives and treasure as the Civil War as a "cure" for the dreaded "liberal" (profligate, over-reaching, etc.) federal government.

    •  No, they're smart. They know their voters. (7+ / 0-)

I was born in Mississippi, moved away when I was 2, but have visited family there regularly my whole life. I'm proud to say most of my Mississippi family are Democrats, and many of them educators, including a former Mississippi Teacher of the Year.

The people introducing this bill know perfectly well it's unconstitutional. And hell, half the voters who like it also know it's unconstitutional. They all just see it as a giant symbolic middle finger to African-Americans, Democrats, liberals, and the federal government. The symbolism is great to them, and that's enough.

Giving that kind of middle finger will win you a lot of votes in Mississippi.

A significant minority of these folks harbor fantasies of using their own guns to fight off Federal troops in black helicopters and blue UN helmets. These folks are being played for fools by the politicians.

the "middle finger" thing as I wrote the comment.  I guess this is just one more way for legislators to cause a big stink without actually doing something useful.  I do worry about the significant minority you mention.  They buy into the whole thing as though it was serious.  They are often the ones who go totally off the rails and start shooting out of frustration when it doesn't pan out like they thought it would.
