If Harkin is leaving because he's fed up with the Senate leadership, that's especially alarming.  We should be chipping away at fossilized rules, not running up the white flag.  And Harkin would only run up the white flag if there were a compelling reason to do so.

    •  Wildly unlikely (5+ / 0-)

You don't make a life-changing decision like this based on a result of the previous day. I know the tantrum-throwers here at DailyKos might like to believe this, but I doubt Harkin is this rash and impetuous.

      Jon Husted is a dick.

      •  It may have just been the last straw. (6+ / 0-)

For those who have been in the Senate for as long as he, they remember when it was functional. It must be very frustrating.

Would have allowed the majority to pass more bills, but it has nothing to do with the way the culture of the Senate has changed. 20 years ago, you would have your fights on the floor and then go golf with the guy across the aisle from you. Today there is no personal comity left in the Senate.

Imagine you work in the same place your whole life and all of your friends are now gone and you're left with a bunch of snotty knownothings that think they each run the show. Welcome to today's Senate.

      •  sounds like it's not so much (1+ / 0-)

based on the result of the previous day, but rather the culmination of 30 years of effort on the issue. Maybe he realized he doesn't want to spend the last 10-15 years of his life beating his head against the same wall.

      •  Well, just saw a video of Senator Harkin on (0+ / 0-)

C-Span's Newsmakers stating that he strongly supports filibuster reform.  (December 2, 2012)

However, I doubt that he's leaving due to Reid's actions (or inactions).

Here's a short video clip that I took from a segment of C-Span's Washington Journal.  It is a minute-plus clip of Senator Harkin talking about the USA Retirement Funds that he has proposed setting up through legislation.

Actually, I thought it more interesting and pertinent that Senator Harkin is slated to receive an award on Monday, January 28, 2013 from NCPERS naming him "Legislator Of The Year," for his proposed USA Retirement Funds legislation.  [NCPERS is The National Conference On Public Employee Systems.]
Senator Harkin has also been lauded by The ACLI [The American Counsel of Life Insurers] for the following:
As Sen. Harkin, the HELP Committee and others work to boost Americans’ retirement security, ACLI and its members will offer their expertise on proposals to ensure every American has access to financial security and peace of mind in retirement.

Here are links to both those websites here and here.
