Latham has passed on state-wide chances before and, after having just won a bitter reelection fight for his House seat, is not likely to give it up for an uphill primary battle against King. And Branstad will run for reelection as Governor again if anything.

Another Dem possibility is Chet Culver, who's been making noise about a political comeback. Given his father John was in the Senate, it makes sense he might want to follow in Dad's footsteps.

But Braley is most likely for the Dems and most likely to be Senator come January of 2015.

He only lost in 2010 because it was, well, 2010 and he was running against Terry Brandstad, but he kept it pretty respectable.

what I remember hearing, even on DKos, in 2010.  I remember being given the impression that he wasn't particularly well-liked, and was expected to lose.

Terry Branstad is a really powerful figure in Iowa with a strong brand. And it was 2010. With the economy like it was, the Democratic brand did poorly and Democrats took a hit across the midwest. Culver wasn't particularly unpopular, and a lot of it was just the cycle. He would have had a 50/50 shot at winning reelection had Branstad not run or lost the primary to vander Platts.

              Apparently I understood wrong then.

Anyone have any idea how popular he is now?  Would he have had a better chance in a stronger year for the Democrats, or would it have been 50/50 either way?
