  •  NRA is critical to the $50-billion scam (5+ / 0-)

that has lied Americans into buying an extra 100,000,000 guns for "home defense" use.

The big number that NRA and their magazines quote over and over is that there are:

-- 2,500,000 defensive gun uses (DGUs) a year in America.

This is a scam. A Big Lie. The core of the scam comes from two researchers, Kleck and Gertz.

These guys Kleck and Gertz are even less credible than anti-evolution climate change deniers. Their own numbers would produce between 75,000 and 207,000 defensive civilian shootings a year in America -- based on their own figures of 3% to 8.3% for gunfire hits per defensive action.

    3% or 8.3% times 2,500,000.

(Depends whether you go with their 3% or their 8% estimates on how many defenses result in shooting somebody. Other research clearly puts gun defenses against actual crimes in the range of 6% to 15% for shooting the attacker.  Physical environment is the strongest factor: never, ever get in a gunfight inside a bodega.)

These civilian "DGU" shootings would result in between 38,000 and 100,000 fatalities a year. That is 3% or 8.3% of the NRA/K&G estimated 2,500,000 DGUs, times one-half for fatalities. DGUs are far more lethal than accidental shootings because more bullets are fired per event and a defender is going to buy one bad-ass heavy weapon. Half the time it's a kill.

Americans have been hammered with this NRA story line for decades. They have bought an extra $50,000,000,000 in guns for home defense over the last two decades.

The real per annum number for defensive gun use fatalities: 232.

That is the FBI number for all civilian justifiable homicides in America, using a gun, in 2010.

    232 DGU fatalities. Not 38,000. Not 100,000.

And that includes gun defenses at the bodegas, pawn shops, gas stations, etc. So the whole NRA line of crap about defensive gun use is a fraud. A false story generated by fakers to trick Americans out of $50-billion.

They market exogenous paranoia. They portray an America that resembles a "Batman" movie. So what is the right number for defensive gun uses (DGUs) by civilians, including small businesses, in the real world ???

-- More like 10,000 or 12,000 DGU events a year.

Home defenses run to less than half of that and a $40-$50 "fire extinguisher" pepper spray canister is safer for homes, anyway.

Of course the NRA creeps wrap themselves in the American flag.

    While singing "Dixie."

"Have you left no sense of decency, sir, at long last?" Army Attorney to Sen. McCarthy, 1954. "We have done nothing to be ashamed of. We have nothing to apologize for." NRA 12/14/2012.
