  •  They've succeeded (14+ / 0-)

in turning away 2 white people.

Actually more than that - we know of 2 different couples who went to live there, and within 3-4 years, were back in NY.

    •  We were seriously considering moving there... (10+ / 0-)

My husband was going to start his own business and we decided to do so in Arizona. Both he and my daughter are avid golfers, my younger daughter loves horseback riding, we'd be significantly closer to my mother...

Then his business got delayed and we stayed here. Things are moving again, so I asked if we are still thinking of Arizona and my rather non/political husband said "people are crazy there -- I don't even want to retire there anymore..."

We used to vacation there every year, but haven't ever since the Papers Please law. Sigh. It's 17 degrees here this week and I could use a week of Arizona about now...

First the thing is impossible, then improbable, then unsatisfactorily achieved, then quietly improved, until one day it is actual and uncontroversial. ... It starts off impossible and it ends up done. - Adam Gopnik

      •  We've got relatives there (5+ / 0-)

We're going back there in March for a wedding, and will be visiting friends and relatives. But relocating there? That was off the menu even BEFORE Brewer and Pearce started their jihad against brown people. AZ politics has always been right-wing and (directly or indirectly) racist. Janet Napolitano was an outlier.

      •  Last month we were in Southern California. (2+ / 0-)

We were driving between San Diego and Palm Springs (through the Santa Rosa mountains - lovely drive!) when we spotted a gigantic obnoxious pickup truck. On the back were not one, but two matching IMPEACH OBAMA! bumper stickers. The rear window sported all kinds of pro-gun sentiments. And on the side door was a fancy custom-made sign saying DIAL 1 FOR BORDER PATROL. I'll give you one guess which state was on the license plate.

        •  California? Sadly, we got racists here too. (3+ / 0-)

Yeah, I know which state you actually saw on the plate. But this state, from the Orange Curtain across and down, is nearly as red politically as AZ.

Can't even claim Northern Cal superiority, not even in the San Francisco area. I had the colossal bad fortune a couple years ago to be stuck in traffic on I-101 in the same direction as a venue doing a Brooks and Dunn concert - and I was surrounded by ugly-ass giant pickups, Confederate flags, and young white men and women in cowboy hats and boots screaming anti-Obama stuff out the window. (I retaliated by rolling down my windows and playing my African music CD at volume 11.)

        •  You would see trucks like this all the time (0+ / 0-)

          in Oregon.

Sorry to hear about your decision not to move here.....we
could certainly use your sanity!  Totally understand, though.  The stupid here is like a BP oil spill that penetrates
into everything.  But you're not missing much this week....
it's cold-ish, rainy, and all the out of state visitors are
complaining that it was nicer at home before they left.
That climate change is a bigger bitch than our governor!

      •  I just moved back here to AZ (0+ / 0-)

at least I can fight here - as opposed to Oregon, where all my representation already agreed with me.
