  •  Birds are very different kinds of pets (17+ / 0-)

Some of your comments apply to all pets. There's nothing more frustrating to me than seeing people treat their pets almost as inanimate objects to fit into a certain compartment in their lives rather than integrated into the family. Any pet needs to have lots of attention, play time, the right food, etc., but birds, as you so eloquently describe, require a different level of commitment. I knew someone years ago whose African Grey had plucked itself bald from boredom. Seriously, don't get a bird if you are not willing to give it the time and attention it needs!

While we were in Brazil last October, we learned that owning parrots there is illegal in all cases, probably because it's a lot harder to tell wild caught from hand-raised than it is here. We happened on a Macaw rescue operation, with lots of Blue and Yellow Macaws along with a few Red and Greens (so, obviously, some people still try to keep them as pets).

We also got to see wild Hyacinth Macaws - spectacular in flight!
