    A Friend of the Earth was supposed to be fiction, along with Margaret Atwood's  look into the future in Oryx and Crake.  Both authors just simply followed a logic based on impending change in the climate and provide a terrifying picture of what our earth could look like in not too many years.  

    I remember in Atwood's A Handmaid's Tale that the protagonist says she can't remember exactly what happened when the world changed (in this case, the breakdown of the U.S. into religious and nonreligious factions), that there was no single event but instead a series of smaller events that accumulated over time, with the population adjusting to each one.  

    That's what I see happening with climate change.  Rather than institute the difficult changes that need to happen now, we'll just adapt to the environmental devastation, hearing small news bits about how one beach has disappeared, then another...

    It's all quite depressing.
