Seriously. The Great Lakes states are sitting next to the worlds largest freshwater lake system and the lakes sort of buffer the extremes of hot or cold weather. They're also relatively immune to catastrophes like hurricanes, especially in the Eastern Great Lakes areas.

Central Ohio spent over a week without power when the remnants of Hurricane Ike went through. Any hurricane that strikes the Gulf Coast can (and often does) come up river or along the mountains and eventually arrives in the Midwest. If we're lucky all we get is rain and some flash flooding.

This summer the Upper Midwest sent us a lovely derecho, which meant another week without power in 100F+ weather.

Take a look at "lake effect snow" -- the areas this occurs in are the areas buffered. Does not do a damn thing for those of us three hours drive south.

Most of the Midwest is in damage range of the New Madrid Fault. And few, if any, of our buildings are built to withstand earthquakes.

Ask anyone from the Cleveland area how much they liked Sandy's visit...

And then there's your common garden variety tornado, or the occasional blizzard. We have natural disasters here -- usually smaller scale than elsewhere...but we're a long, long way from immune.

according to Muskegon Critic. I tried to talk my spouse into getting some property in Detroit because artists were moving there and trying to make sustainable communities. Maybe he was right to say no.

governance.  Detroit is in the middle of a 40 year long corruption phase and is currently in a huge fight with the state of MI over Detroit going bankrupt.  It is a mess.  And the taxpayers of Detroit are getting the shaft.  Poor services, bad schools, takeover of taxpayer funds for charter schools, reduced police and fire.  Bullets flying everywhere.  Literally.  Girls getting raped on their walk to school from creeps jumping out of abandoned, boarded up houses along the way.  Very bad city council that can't find their ass with both hands.

There has been some development and some hopeful types have moved to Detroit.  But crime is not being addressed at the prevention level.  Education is not a priority to the level that in needed.  (Think 'stitch in time saves nine', and then understand Detroit started unraveling 40 years ago with NO stitches made.....)

There is a sustainability plan out there that is getting some attention with Kresge dropping 150M to get it started.  But it is a drop in a bucket.

Having said all that, Welcome to MI should you decide to move here!!
