    And this is important to the message.   The state is not concerned with the god issue, and never has been.

    If it had, a Catholic who was divorced could not remarry without an anulment; along with orthodox jews without a get.   Marriages after being widows would be certain practices.

    No, the government has never cared about faith.

    I will admit, for years I primarily sided on the: government should get rid of marriage altogether and accept socially binding contracts for all, however you want them.

    However, I get that the social setting which prepares people for marriage is significant, and the economic impact of same is huge.   Reality is, allow gay marriages and there is an immediate and direct financial benefit.   That's cold but true.  More marriages mean more work for those in that industry, and trust me if you want to see an insanely decked out marriage, straight people do not have that market cornered.

    Marriages are expensive and easy social contracts that make society money.   That's what it's about.   Whatever "God" has to say about it hasn't factored in for years, though it gets trotted out so people can feel as though they should be offended for God, and Jesus, and the Bible.
