  •  Kansas Has Awesome Wind Resources (4+ / 0-)

The reported wind resource of Kansas using no-too-efficient circa 2008 GE 1.5 MW x 77 meter rotors x 80 meter tall towers is roughly 410 GW on a DELIVERED basis (MW-hr/yr divided by hrs/yr). The entire US consumes around 470 GW. the fast and consistent winds coupled to flat lands and few trees mean you can get a lot of electricity made using less expensive turbines than are needed in "normal" locations (yes, Kansas is abnormal in many ways, especially in its wind resource). With the newer model turbines, that number is probably closer to 500 GW. That's quite the non-depletable energy source.....

Wind sourced electricity has a production cost of less than 6.5 cents/kw-hr on an unsubsidized basis in windy places like Kansas; with subsidies averaging 2.5 c/kw-hr (20yr average), wind turbines need 4 c/kw-hr to break even. This is putting a severe hurt on the nat gas biz, which is really big in parts of Kansas. In particular, the rip-off profits from old, fully paid off gas wells. That's where the opposition comes from.....

    •  And that's not including the windbag repubs! (0+ / 0-)

      •  I meant to add that we're looking at putting up (0+ / 0-)

towers on our land in Illinois. Where we live, we have windfarms to the SW and NE of us. We're in the pattern and have 12-15 MPH winds on average. It only makes sense to harvest that energy!
