With the disproportionate representation in the Senate, the Republican minority that rules by filibuster and other perversions was elected by a very small minority of Americans from the most overrepresented states (except VT).

    •  It is estimated to be ~30% of electorate ... (0+ / 0-)

is represented by the "Minority of the Minority" that can bring a halt to any action they choose in the US Senate.

I like what Thomas Jefferson thought was important about majority rule in a democracy:

"Democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where 51% of the people may take away the rights of the other 49%."
If it be nothing more than mob rule, it's better than what we now have in the US Senate.

      •  Rights (0+ / 0-)

Jefferson said a lot of things (like "Sally, I love you").

Pure democracy can take away the rights of the minority. But we have a Constitution, a judiciary, and all kinds of balances of power that protect minority rights.

Minority privileges, however, include arbitrary tyrannies protected by our republic. The filibuster is chief among them.

The minority has the right to be heard. It does not have the right to overrule the majority, or to prevent the majority's choice from being heard.

What we have in the Senate and elsewhere is executocracy. Any executive can do whatever they want, public or private, with impunity. Notice how the "mob rule" has never done anything for the mob that hasn't been for the further betterment of the mobsters.
