"Flaring" as in burning it right out there in the open - Financial Times had a picture on the front page yesterday, taken from space, showing Chicago and other American cities at night, and there are the fracking Bakken flares, lighting up the night sky over North Dakota like they were a fair-sized city.  And this gas?  It comes from fracking? New Scientist article on Bakken flares And it is cheaper to burn it into the air than to capture it? I would love to know how all the well flares of gases - natural gas and methane - compare in tons of carbon to those flights.  I think science writers could write about halting air pollution and waste of resources without threatening their fantasy of vacationing at a science writers convention in Bali.  BTW, to add actual injury to all the insults, North Dakota is also home to Indian reservations where people may freeze to death, waiting for somebody to provide fuel for their heaters.  If we have to burn off gases, is it too much to ask that the gases be burned to save lives?

prohibitive. I read today an article referencing that photo saying the gas could heat a half million homes. But homes don't cost much to heat Another thought about that photo... what about the other bright spots?

When I am king...... a huge carbon tax on business flights, the carbon equivalent of five transcontinental flights for personal reasons untaxed, after that at the business rates.

Plenty to go see friends and relatives, I'd think it would have a huge affect on flights.

How big is your personal carbon footprint?
