    and having a daughter who's 20.

It's this generation's Sex and the City, crossed with... I don't know. Raw is a good word. Rawly honest, I fear. Terrifying to parents of 20-something girls.

Written by, directed by, created by and acted by it's creator, Lena Dunham, who's now 26 years old. She would have been 24, I think, when she sold the show to HBO and started writing/producing/acting in it.

in my life but the women always wanted to have sex and it wasn't like you see in this show. When I watch the show I wonder if this is the "new normal."

talk about the show -- and one thing that frequently comes up (from the people I read, anyway) is that this work is honestly from a woman's point of view. Even taking into account the age/regional/generational differences, that's going to be a major frame-shift.

Google some stuff up when you've got time -- blogs/online mags are probably preferable to traditional newsmedia. I remember seeing some stuff (but not where) discussing differences between men & women reviewers...

        •  Yes, it is most definitely the work of a girl. (3+ / 0-)

If you consider a mid-20-something a girl. She certainly seems like one to me. A very powerful, intelligent, brave, talented person, but still a girl.

There was a point in the first episode where she tells her parents she thinks she might be "the voice of her generation or a voice of her generation," and no doubt she is.

She made a film, using mostly relatives and friends, about a girl graduating from college and moving back home, trying to find a job and find a guy she liked, when she must have been just getting out of college herself. It was shown at Sundance, and from there, she got the HBO show.

"Honey, please stop having really bad sex with boys you hardly know or don't even like."

I fear we've gone from the days of my mother when girls were told they were sluts if they had sex before marriage to the point where, with my daughter's generation, a lot of them have taken on the idea that they should feel fine having sex with anyone, all the time. Whether they really want to or enjoy it or even know their partner well. That they're being old-fashioned or something, if they don't want to have sex with any body who comes along.

And I suspect a lot of them are having a lot of really bad sex and then wondering what's wrong with them or that they're just girls who don't like sex.

Which makes me really sad for them.

    •  It really shows many of the guys (0+ / 0-)

As the selfish creeps they can often be when they are young and haven't figured out things like love, kindness and compassion.
