    Lifelong Presbyterian, political progressive here.

    1. Presbyterians tend to be politically active. I think it's partly because we elect all our leaders in a sorta-federal organization, and partly because we tend to be generally in favor of education and scholarship, for both clergy and laity. The only minister who signed the Declaration of Independence, John Witherspoon, was a Presbyterian.

    2. Some Presbyterians are poltically liberal (Woodrow Wilson), some conservative (Ronald Reagan).

    3. There are actually several Presbyterian denominations:

    * The Presbyterian Church (USA) is the biggest, and is mostly fairly progressive. The "More Light Presbyterians" are an informal group of PCUSA churches who make it a point to welcome LGBTQ people. You can probably find one in your area here: http://www.mlp.org/

    * The Presbyterian Church in America is conservative.

    * The Evangelical Presbyterian Church is also conservative.

    * There are various other small Presbyterian denominations, mostly conservative: http://en.wikipedia.org/... (Favorite Presbyterian joke: two Germans, two French people, two Brits, and two Scots were marooned on a desert island. The Germans started a scientific society; the French folks started a literary society; the Brits started a debating society; and the Scots started the First and Second Presbyterian Churches.)

May you find a church where you and your family are welcomed and treasured!

Raymond Guterman, pastor of First Presbyterian of Ocala, married my wife and I in 1983. We're still in touch occasionally. He and his wife Donna are wonderful human beings.
