  •  Thanks for your diary (4+ / 0-)

Recently I have developed an interest in evolution and the people involved in the different theories pre-Darwin and post-Darwin.  Interesting stuff.

Especially interesting is August Weissman and his experiments with cutting off the tails of mice in his efforts to disprove pangenesis. (I think that is the word).

If it behooves you, you might consider writing diaries about the people involved in the "evolution" of evolution.  It wasn't a done deal with Darwin.  He began the new thinking but it took Mendel and many others to finally bring Darwin's natural selection theory to fruition.

I think it was Carl Sagan (and probably many others) who said that we never have a "correct" model; we only have models that get successively closer to correctness.

BTW, Mendel's work was published before Darwin's, but Darwin was unaware of the work at the time.

Let us all have the strength to see the humanity in our enemies, and the courage to let them see the humanity in ourselves.

      •  True that Mendel's work was published (4+ / 0-)

before Darwin, but it was pretty much ignored.  It wasn't until around 1900 that Mendel's work was rediscovered and its significance was understood.

It is my understanding that Mendel sent Darwin the results of his work thinking it would be of help, but Darwin put it aside.

I agree with you 100% that science is never a done deal.  That is what makes it so exciting.
