  •  It makes me think of Emmett Till (18+ / 0-)

and his mother. It was very brave of Pozner to stand witness like that.

I don't understand what people think when they accuse people like her of an agenda. We look at the NRA and say, "follow the money" and the pro-gun crowd tries to throw that back, saying we have an agenda.

Yes, Veronique Pozner's agenda might include having her six-year-old child back. And I bet Jim Brady would have liked not to spend the remainder of his adult life in a wheelchair. And maybe Gabby Giffords would still like to be in the House of Representatives. There's your agenda.

An unsuccessful shoe bomb attack resulted in nine years of inconvenience for every flier in the country. It would be nice to think [this diabolical act] might lead to some similar inconveniences. --mrblifil

They have three understandings of the world:

      1. Everything I believe, if you disagree with me at all, you MUST believe the exact, polar opposite (no matter what you say!). Total binary thinking. If I like capitalism, if you disagree with me on anything, you must (MUST!) utterly hate capitalism (and be a commie, socialist, etc.). If I like guns, you MUST hate them and want to ban them utterly (this is the basis for their reaction to every gun regulation, i.e. there can be no such thing as control or management, only complete freedom to own and concealed-carry nuclear weapons, or complete bans of everything). If I love America, you must totally hate it, etc. Everything in black and white, no shades of grey or nuance.

      2. Everything is done for money. These are the people who worship the glorious hedge fund mangers and captains of Wall Street and Walmart in one breath and accuse climate scientists of cooking the books (say this in the most revolted tone of voice possible) "for money!" The idea that one might be motivated by wanting to make the world a better place or function better -- or stave off utter disaster -- is utterly alien to them. Everything is an angle and a dodge to con the rubes out of their money. They can't imagine doing anything for moral reasons, so they presume everyone else is a con man, too.

      3. Any disagreement with me, no matter how slight, diminishes me and cannot be allowed. Right wingers have such hollow, feeble egos and self image that any disagreement is grounds for eternal war and blinding hatred. Unsure of the moral or logical underpinnings of their beliefs, unable to argue cogently for them, they cannot brook even the slightest disagreement. Since 99% of their beliefs are based on the most shallow "just so stories" and self-serving rationalizations (for examples, just listen to Paul Ryan, Pat Robertson, Sean Hannity, Glen beck, etc.) they cannot meet argument with logic or nuance. They think in bumper stickers and double standards (it's OK for ME to do X, but not OK for YOU to do X). And they assume everyone else does, too. They don't have to listen to what you say, they have the talking points handed down from fox news and nothing will ever change their minds.

Add in the idea that conservatism cannot fail, it can only BE failed, along with the usual racism, sexism, and standard-issue bigotries, and you have a pretty concise description of the right-wing mind-set.

    •  Mrs. Pozner wants to keep other kids (5+ / 0-)

safe - she's going the extra mile for everyone else even in the midst of her own terrible loss.

That's her agenda and I'm supportive of it as well as extremely grateful for her courage.

“One look, and your life was absolutely changed,” said Michael McGowan, one of the first police officers to arrive at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, as a gunman, in the space of minutes, killed 20 first graders and 6 adults.
