But Mark Mattioli, whose son James, 6, was also killed at Sandy Hook Elementary on Dec. 14, said: “I believe in a few simple gun laws. I think we have more than enough on the books. We should hold people individually accountable for their actions.”

The problem is not gun laws,” he added. “The problem is a lack of civility.”

Mr. Mattioli said he also thought some liberals were using the attack in Newtown to spread fear on gun issues.

But I think its important.  Just as in the previous comment, you are not doing what I am discussing here.  Let's just all be careful.

You are not doing what I am about to criticise, but we should be careful here.

There are currently a couple diaries on the recent list calling out folks for heckling Sandy Hook parents who advocated for greater gun control...and I think we would all agree that none of the parents should face that sort of thing.

That goes for Mark Mattioli as well.

Yes, we can disagree with him, but I would far prefer just to make our case for gun control without mentioning him at all.  He is facing his own tragedy, one that I cannot begin to understand.

There are plenty of villains in the pro-gun movement, let's focus on them instead of the parents of victims.

is in the public sphere: would you hoot down and attack Mattoli for his views? No. They have no problem attacking someone who has a different take, because their gun is more important than any child's life, even their own family. Elevating the fetish into an all consuming obsession.
