  •  so better to leave them to their fate? (4+ / 0-)

Tough luck for them to be poor and not have a strong enough military to defend themselves from well-financed terrorists.

As much as I hate the "white man's burden" and tendency of the west to imperialize, I cannot stomach the idea that we should just sit back and watch while people are being terrorized, begging for our help, if we are the only ones who have the resources to act.  To me, that's just as cruel of an imperialism.

But like I've indicated, I'm biased.  I have family that this affects.  If the French had not taken action, at this moment my five year old goddaughter might be swaddled in a hijab.

You have roots in Mali, so naturally you're concerned about family and friends there.

While France doing this is nice in the short-term, please don't get too trusting of them.

      •  thanks. But also please realize (6+ / 0-)

that BECAUSE I have family in Mali and am very familiar with the long history with France, I'm not a starry-eyed idealist.  Anyone who thinks that they (France) don't already have a significant amount of influence and interest in Mali isn't paying attention.  Malians aren't stupid.  They are justifiably wary of losing their autonomy and are proud of their country.  But they are also cognizant of how close they have come to losing their culture, heritage and freedom to these extremists.

I hope your family is doing well. :)

My only problem is when Americans in particular and Westerners in general assume military intervention is always necessary or good, or that it's the first, last and only solution to any given world crisis.

For the record, neither France nor the Islamists deserve to have a say in Mali's direction. I completely agree with you. Francois Hollande is a Socialist, but that doesn't mean his intentions are well-meaning. Of course I don't need to tell you that! ;)
