Good diners are full of comfort foods.

    •  They are but sadly they are becoming extinct. (8+ / 0-)

Also, too, 20 years ago Chicago was filled with "family" restaurants owned and operated by some of our large population of Greek immigrants many of whom started out working in Greek restaurants. There are still plenty of good Greek restaurants but not of the "family" kind. They all had the same menus, same specials on the same day, made great homemade soup and served up wonderful breakfasts. I cherish the one that is still left in my neighborhood and patronize them regularly.

Speaking of Greek food, Barba Yianni has the BEST navy bean soup on Thursday and their pastichio is damn good. Think I know where I'll be going.....

        and that you patronize it.

It's rare for us to go to a chain restaurant.  We live in an area of the country where we really love our diners (though I'm sure many other areas do too). the Philadelphia metro area.

There are a few that we favor but one in particular and it's close by. It's owned by two Greek American brothers and in addition to having great food, they also recognize us when we go and they make it clear that they are happy to have our business.  Their prices are great and their food is great and why would we go to a chain restaurant when we can have homemade soup and a ton of choices?  Every time we go we marvel at the range of different things they have on their menu and we don't know how they do it.  Plus they have great looking pies and desserts also made in-house, though it's rare that we have enough room for dessert ;)

In that same vicinity, the Pizza Hut went out of business but the diner is still thriving and they are building another one down the street.
