  •  I used to think that the fear was manufactured (7+ / 0-)

in order to intimidate and subordinate the base. However, I am now fairly certain that the fear is real and endemic. Cons are afraid. It's a feeling.
The problem is that they do not know where it comes from. I think most of them were born with it. And no amount of cosetting and caring and nurturing gets rid of it.
Can it be overcome? I don't know. I think they have to do it themselves -- like my grandson, whose afraid of heights, has to conquer the stairs every time he visits. Why is he afraid? He doesn't know. We think it's because the stairs are circular and open and, especially coming down, one seems to be stepping into a void, the air. So, I think it's a perception problem -- a matter of not feeling grounded. He probably wouldn't like being up on a horse, either. Telling him to just look at the step where he puts his feet seems to help.
A lot of people grew up in the depression/war/boomer generation without helpful parental guidance. They had to accommodate themselves to their fears, perhaps with denial. And now they resent that children are being coddled and fussed over and treated like little princes. So, their fears turn into antagonism.

We organize governments to deliver services and prevent abuse.
