  •  Lanza's motives were FAR differnt from 9/11 (23+ / 0-)

and were likely - I can't chisle this in stone yet - emotionally-driven, if not falling under genuine psychiatric disturbance.

He did not have a political agenda. He wanted to hurt his mom. She was apparently a substitute teacher for them.

that's what I think and it is erroneous to think he wanted to be 'famous'.

I think he was vastly disturbed and there ~may~ have been a plan in the family to have him 'seen somewhere', whatever that may mean.

That is as far as I will speculate, but it was NOT a political incident. It was psychiatric tragedy not terrorism.

and whether you choose to see it that way or not, like the New Mexico teen who planned to shoot up Wal-Mart, it was in fact domestic terrorism.

      It's working, too.

Still, investigators have gagged themselves for the time-being; we'll have to wait for an official report to learn whether what was reported (on many subjects) was actually true or not ... and to learn the rest of the story, of which there clearly is one.

    •  Ms. Lanza: no verifiable connection to Sandy Hook (6+ / 0-)

I appreciate the emotion behind you statement. I respectfully would like to correct one fact.

The Newtown police have made no statement about either mother or son as to motive.

Many of the claims about her are first hours suppositions that have proven not to be true--remember the mix-up with his brother?  This includes connection to the school. There was none.

I think we can do best to wait until we know more about his motives. We may. He damaged the drive on his computer and the FBI is trying to recover the data from it.

      Larger point:

People in the disability community here on Kos have asked us not to presume things about the connection between the shooting and mental health, and thus mother and son.

At least it's been reported as such.  Has that been discredited/disproved since then?  All attempts to tie the mother to the school have come up empty, as best I know.

It is now widely reported that Lanza did not attend that school.

no good deed etc. so thanx for saying so. will not try to link, as device has destroyed comment each time i embed.

but usa today 12/18/12 reported conflicting evidence of his attending SH for short time in 5th grad, nothing coming from police and family denying it.

      •  I was more than clear enough that it was not (4+ / 0-)

        established official fact. Really clear.

We'll see what comes out, if we're allowed to know important details.

It is an everyday occurrence in America that somebody gets bent out of shape about something and decides a gun is the answer to whatever it is: To posit emotions as a motivation is hardly going out on a limb.

And lastly, the comment was specifically a reply to an allegation that this was somehow a terrorist act and not just a free-standing bland pronouncement ; nor was it intended as a comprehensive analysis of the event.

    •  not a substitute teacher (5+ / 0-)

she was a former? stock broker. She was divorced and got a hefty per year alimony, she wasn't associated with the school. Her arsenal of weapons was to protect her stuff when the l apocalyptic cliffs fell on the peons and they invaded suburbia en mass. Psychiatric tragedy undoubtedly but where is the line between a society (political) that is so addicted to fear and violence and this type of individual psychosis. Where does society's madness end and the individuals begin?

She knew he was troubled and yet she taught him to shoot and had a houseful of heavy artillery. Our societies reaction to 9/11 is anything but sane reaction. Were still years later killing people globally, we have given up our human and civil rights, we torture we incarcerate, we criminalize truth tellers, we are vengeful and cruel, all because we fear 'other' and think killing or shooting or drone/bombing people will 'keep us safe'. May not be terrorism as defined by the geopolitical propaganda and fear were feed daily but I think the mass killings in our society goes way beyond Lanza's or any other mucker's psychiatric tragedy.

      •  The attitude of a large number of people about gun (3+ / 0-)

is a huge part of the problem.

Guns are essentially dangerous, but inert without human interaction: the don't load or shoot themselves.

The folks screaming about killing people if guns are threatened (or whatever) are terrorists - its the fundamental definition - I want X, give it to me or I'll blow up your family. that's what that is.

But beyond them so many people have what I consider really odd ideas about wht guns mean and can do.

They are like drugs in some people's hands: false sense of security, sense of power, extra confidence.

Other people use them correctly and simply aren't part of the problem; I won't further define either group except to reiterate a lot of Americans view guns in a virtually magic way.
