Many of the people who espouse unfortunate views come from some of the nicest places in the world. Case in point is Canada and especially Calgary. Monsieur Cruz did not turn out the way he is because he is from Calgary. The larger point you're making could have been done without the perjorative parathesification (totally made up word) of Calgary. Yes, it's the quintessential oil town and all that, but it also has an Ismaili mayor (probably the first in any major NA city with over 1million people). I suspect it also has many faithful Kossacks.... Calgarians certainly did not propel him onto the platform from which he can now set about trying to make good on those views....

CarmenE, I agree with your comments about Calgary.

Ted Cruz and his parents were on their way back to Texas when he was four. I doubt he has many memories of Canada at all. It is his parents who had the most influence on him in those early years, I'm sure.

Calgary's last municipal election was an awesome thing to behold. Naheed Nenshi was originally given no chance of winning, but he began to gain support and it just shot up.

People were not talking about his ethnicity or religion. The focus was on the issues and the candidates. He won in almost every part of the city, as I recall.

He's a first-rate mayor. He is also one of the friendliest and warmest people I've ever come across in politics. He's a genuinely nice guy.
