      When politicians in Washington talk about building up the military, they mean buying more expensive stuff, including the stuff from defense contractors in the politician's own district.

      They certainly don't mean spending more to improve compensation and benefits for members of the military or veterans.

      They don't really want a big military for the sake of defeating enemies.

      The enemies they're after are their own opponents in the next election, so support from defense contractors is good. For them.

        Personal firearms are pretty big business in a lot of red districts.  Maybe not quite as big as defense contracting, but big still.
