My understanding: SSDI is Federal, part of the Social Security system. On top of that (or really underneath it, shoring up the safety net) is state-administered SSI, less money but often faster. Many people get the state one for temporary, or while they're waiting for a decision on the Federal program. SSI usually comes with Medicaid; SSDI comes with Medicare.

Why? Because. . . . socialism and states' rights and stuff, I think. Just like Medicaid is state-administered and states set the amounts and income limits, while Medicare is Federal.

Definitely contact local social services (if not already done) and get everything you're eligible for, including food stamps, and find out about shelter options for temporary. There may also be a Victim Advocate office in the court where the domestic violence matter will be heard.

Stay safe and post an update when you can.
