It's scrolled out of living memory now, but there's 20th-century writing where people muse about the fact that nobody casually carries rifles on the street any more.

To be clear, this is of course not comparable. A hundred years ago there were a lot more reasons for people to have guns and the guns were less dangerous if misused.

In today's society I wouldn't want to go back to that way of doing things, though it was pretty harmless then.

    Just offering historical perspective.

      •  Haven't we arguably devolved? (3+ / 0-)

In 1913, everyone could comfortably take for granted that there was no danger from the person with the rifle.

Today we don't have that assurance, which is why we need laws against disturbing the peace. Is that really progress?

Oh, lest I derail with historical musings:
That guy was a reckless idiot who at considerable cost to those around accomplished nothing worthwhile, indeed just the opposite.

        •  There were murders in 1913. (0+ / 0-)

There were accidents.  It wasn't some halcyon time when everyone knew their neighbors and everyone was right in the head.  It was caveat emptor and we've moved past that with all kinds of laws against it.....disturbing the peace, zoning laws, consumer protection, protection of the mentally ill (you used to be able to just kill them).....all kinds of stuff to make it easier for all of us to co-exist on the planet and give some consideration to the least among us. I ain't goin' back.  It's part of why I'm a liberal :-)

    •  Once upon a time in Texas... (8+ / 0-)

Once upon a time in Texas, guns were kept in the home for storage and for self defense.  Guns outside the home if transported in a car were on their way to a shooting range or were being taken on a hunting trip.  Law enforcement and bad actors carried weapons on their person and getting caught carrying was seriously bad news.

But that was back when Democrats ran the state.  And then folks without a lick of sense started getting elected.  The Republicans had arrived.

Used to be, country folk wouldn't vote for a Republican if you paid them...but things change...particularly when you lie to folks well enough and often enough.

Now all those same folks wouldn't vote for a Democrat if you paid them.  And so, now we have Gov. Rick Perry...the epitome of the all hat and no cattle good ol' boy.

      And we have guns everywhere.

I am a 67 year old teacher...teaching computer applications in a Texas high school. I've already retired once but it didn't take.

    •  There is also, to my mind, a huge difference.... (2+ / 0-)

...Between someone walking down a country road with a bolt-action rifle or a shotgun slung over their shoulder, or someone who keeps their shotgun in a rack in their car, and someone walking into a crowded, well, -anywhere- with an assault rifle.  Particularly since there have been so many assault-rifle-related mass shootings recently, anyone -else- with a gun could probably have shot the guy on sight and legitimately claim self-defense.
