  •  Tipping point is passed (10+ / 0-)

Obama was cautious and did not fully commit until his team judged that the net political impact would be not harm them.   Then once he openly declared, he made it possible for many previously on-the-fence constituents to openly agree.

Progress leading to accelerated progress ... a positive feedback loop.  I think there's no going back, now.

    •  One of the ways change occurs (10+ / 0-)

Part of the process of change is for people to know that the possibility exists to think another way.

      •  Yep. It meant a lot to me as an ally (2+ / 0-)

whenever someone from roughly the same religious background as I would come out as an ally in general or specifically as pro-marriage-equality, because the 'it's impossible for someone who believes [x, y, z unrelated things I believe in] to be pro-gay!' framing is so strong.

I can't count the number of times I played Gore's marriage vid the week - even just the day - it came out. He was SBC like I'd been, and he'd walked away for many of the same reasons I did and kept much of the same beliefs I did, and there he was coming to the same conclusion and it wasn't just me.

And that was with me already having things figured out for myself. If that had come out five or so years earlier, when I was first trying to figure what was absolute harmful lies and what was worth keeping... It would have meant even more to me and would have cut out a lot of self-justification-searching to get around things not many with the same past were vocally rejecting back then.

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.
